Jason Aingorn NyC Dj

Jason Aingorn,
known in many New York music circles by his DJ moniker J.A., is a fast-rising, young talent on the underground scene in New York. Jason lives just outside New York City in Long Island, New York. As of yet, the highlight of his career so far has been sharing the stage with Ferry Corsten and Jason Jollins at Crobar in October of ’06. Aside from that, Jason has been the resident DJ at The Isle and Sasha Lounge in New York City and is currently lining up a residency for the spring and summer time in Montreal, Canada at Main Bar. Being only twenty years old, there is still a long way to go for this rising talent in the business. He has currently set up his production studio to begin work on producing tracks that allow him to express himself much greater than could be done by simply playing other people’s tracks.

When asked how he got into Trance and Progressive Trance, Jason’s reply was that in 6th grade he had his first taste of the genre with Razor & Guido’s “Do It Again.” Impressed with the song when it was an underground classic, Jason longed for more such tracks and eventually scoured record shops searching for other sounds. He began to pick up more records from the likes of Danny Tenaglia, Junior Vasquez and Richie Hawtin, renowned New York DJ’s. However, it all finally clicked for Jason when he stumbled across mixed CD’s from The Ministry of Sound in England where Judge Jules began to influence the sound Jason was interested in. Eventually being glued to Judge Jules’ radio show every Saturday, Jason began to get the exposure to Progressive House and Trance that he was looking for. He began to take notes on artists that Judge Jules featured and started to look out for new releases from those artists.

Jason toyed with the idea of being a DJ in high school after two of his friends came up with the idea for a production trio, with him anchoring. When asked about it, Jason replied, “We were all interested in how to DJ and the possibilities it offered. What made it better is that we all liked a different style of music, so playing a party would be a lot of fun for us and for the crowd.” Due to his unemployment for the better part of high school, Jason was unable to muster the cash to get the proper equipment. However, after entering Hofstra University in the Fall of 2004 as a Freshman, Jason started to toy with the idea again. Now that he had a job working as a Valet at Il Mulino New York, the steady source of income could be the launch pad that he needed to pursue his dream.

Over a two week break around New Year’s, Jason found himself in the Caribbean paradise of St. Maarten. Going out every night, he became very frustrated with the music selection because it was all the same mainstream house music and hip hop every night. However, despite the poor music selection, Jason got a firsthand look at how to DJ and what equipment to purchase. Upon arriving home in the first week of January ‘05, Jason ran over to the nearest Guitar Center with his CD’s in hand and started to put the store’s DJ setup to good use. With two CDJ 1000’s, a DJM-600 mixer and KRK monitors, Jason began to teach himself how to DJ. Sometimes it took an offhand pointer from some of the staff at the shop, but Jason picked up beat-matching quickly and figured out that there are many things that can be done once songs are beat-matched. Then, Jason began to experiment with switching drum-lines and bass lines between tracks and dropping vocals over looped portions of tracks. Getting this valuable experience under his belt, Jason then completed the purchase of his own equipment. His first setup included a Pioneer DJM-3000 mixer, a Pioneer CDX-800, two KRK monitors, Audio-Technica Headphones and 2 Numark TTX turntables. The only part of the setup that has changed today is the CDX-800 which was swapped for 2 Denon DN-S3500. When asked why he doesn’t change his headphones to a better one, Jason replies that, “There are certain things that I am superstitious over and my headphones are one of them.”

Jason often frequents Satellite Records in Lower Manhattan to browse the shelves for new records and to chat with other DJ’s that are also around the shop. The first record he ever purchased was Warrior-Warrior and the latest record that he has purchased is Chab -Closer To Me (Digweed/Lexicon Avenue Remixes). His top artists in the collection are Sander Van Doorn, Matthew Dekay, Gabriel & Dresden, Ferry Corsten, Junkie XL, and Gareth Emery.

DJing for Jason is a way to express himself through music. Good music is like ammunition for rocking a party and giving the crowd a rush is very gratifying for Jason. However, he feels that DJ’s in the business get a bit too much credit and that many party-goers are hung up on names rather than music. “If it was up to me, the DJ would have only a dim light on him so as not to take any of the substance away from the music,” said Jason. For Jason, he feels that New York is especially tough for up and coming DJ’s because “a lot of people in the scene act as if they are too cool. Everyone tries to look, act, and be as cool as possible. A lot of those people don’t keep it real and most of them don’t want to take a chance on some of the younger guys because they are worried that he doesn’t have enough of a following.” Hopefully, J.A. can change some of that thinking.
