A minister of music with a very unique style of delivering God’s message through his mixes. His commission is to take the good news to places it was not able to be heard and deliver it in a way for those who want to hear…can. Al “Hot Mix” Holmes can be currently heard every day on the Stellar Award winning station, Inspiration 1390AM WGRB – Chicago, which was voted the best gospel station of the year. You can tune in Monday – Friday for “The Jubilee” at 3 p.m. CST and the “Joy Ride Home” at 5 p.m. CST…30 minutes of the greatest gospel mixes. While venturing into remixing and producing, “Hot Mix” became the President of his own record label “Pathway Records”, the only record label dedicated to Gospel House Music. He is the co-owner of Iron Blade Studios. Al “Hot Mix” Holmes DJ career started in 1982 while attending the historical Mendel High School. After graduating high school, he attended Columbia School of Broadcasting, where he further fine tuned and expanded his abilities. After completing his broadcast training he joined Pro DJs, a local mobile DJ company. There he performed at numerous weddings, company events, graduations and school parties while supplying monthly mix tapes for the company’s DJs. Later as time went by he decided to expand even more. A few years later “Hot Mix” entered into radio broadcasting. He co-hosted “Christian Underground” with Tony Mundaca on WYCA 92.3 FM in Chicago. There he also guest hosted “The Gospel Hour” on the same station. Years later he received his big break. He was asked to provide mini mixes for the Darryl King Show on Rejoice 102.3 FM also in Chicago. This break led to his own weekend mix show which he programmed and produced called “The Friday Night Praise Mix.” During this time he also started breaking into internet radio. He started submitting mixes to www.gospelhousemusic.com and till this day is a regular on www.mixing4u.com in the U.K. Later he was invited to guest DJ on Club 710 on www.worldviberadio.net which blossomed into a DJ residency on the same show. An opportunity for his own show was presented and thus history was made…World Vibe Jams was born. A year later “Hot Mix” was asked to also guest DJ on the D’Vine 1 gospel house show. This also lead to a DJ residency on the same show, and can still be heard to this day at www.chicagohouseradio.com. “Hot Mix” can also be heard on a brand new show “Soul Heaven” every Friday, 4–6 p.m. CST at www.insoulwetrust.com. This is a two hour show of soulful house music. What do you like most about djing and or producing ? I LOVE DJING BECAUSE IT ALLOWS YOU TO DEFINITELY CONNECT WITH THE CROWD AND BEING ABLE TO MOVE A GROUP OF PEOPLE FROM DIFFERENT BACKGROUNDS, PERSONALITIES AND BE ABLE TO JUST CONNECT WITH THEM.
AS A PRODUCER ITS EXCITING AT THE SAME TIME HUMBLING TO BE ABLE TO SEE THE REACTIONS OF PEOPLE RESPONDING TO THE MUSIC AND TO ACTUALLY ENJOY WHAT WAS A THOUGHT IN YOUR HEAD THAT YOU DECIDED TO SHARE.
Your Thoughts on vinyl vs mixing software. I LOVE AND WELCOME THE NEW TECHNOLOGY. I BELIEVE IT HELPS A DJ TO BE MORE CREATIVE AND ALLOWS THE DJ TO TAKE AN IDEA AND ACTUALLY PERFORM IT. AFTER EXPERIENCING THE NEW TECHNOLOGY AND GEAR, I WILL ACTUALLY FEEL HANDCUFFED GOING BACK TO VINYL RECORDS. ANYTHING THAT MAKES MY JOB EASIER, CREATIVE AND MORE PRODUCTIVE IS MY BEST FRIEND.
